Midjourney 5.1 is out! See the difference
It feels like version five of big journey has been out forever. It's only been maybe two months and several thousand images later from me… But we now have an update version 5.1.
Here's what they have to say about this version:
V5.1 is more opinionated (like V4) and is MUCH easier to use with short prompts - There is a 'unopinionated' mode for V5.1 (similar to V5.0 default) called "RAW Mode" - Don't worry V5 is still available (as before) Other changes in V5.1 vs V5.0 - Higher coherence - More accuracy to text prompts - Fewer unwanted borders or text artifacts - Improved sharpness
I don't quite understand the raw mode. Maybe Summer wants to answer down below what that's about… But let me show you some of the differences I see you right away.
First, to enable 5.1 here are the instructions:
How to enable V5.1: - Go to /settings
and click "V5.1" (on the second row) or type--v 5.1
after your prompt - For RAW mode click the RAW Mode
button under /settings
(after clicking V5.1) or type --style raw

You can test is one of two ways. One is just to put the same prompt in. But the more effective way is to use the seed feature. To enable and find the seed on a particular generation, reply to the photo with an ✉️ and you'll find the seat number generates. From there you can add “––seed 123456” whatever the number is, and it will generate the same image with a new parameter, or a new set of terms, but using the same models, settings, it's really interesting how it works.
Photo with that same seed:
This is pretty strikingly different. Noticeably the lighting looks more flush in some ways more natural but it's unclear. But look at the back lighting on the head of the models and how the hairs are so distinctive. This is pretty amazing. Also, for some reason, it has chosen it off the shoulder dress for all of the models. You can tell that some of the models look similar to their particular version but… It does seem a little off from what I anticipated.
Try another one. This is another model based on a very intricate setting by a user on Twitter that I refined.
Stunning really. One of my favorites. Let’s try it without and with: the seed.
Without. Brighter lighting. Perhaps more natural hair. It shows a fuller body shot. The setting looks less like a model photo shoot, and more natural and authentic frankly.
Now WITH the seed:
Interesting test. You may remember our feature on paper quilling. That only works very well in version four. Inversion five paper quilling got to realistic and lost his style and texture in some ways. Let's try 5.1 with paper quilling and see what we find:
Here’s the 4.0 version from this article:
Well this is beautiful:
OK. Let’s look at plants and flowers. Macro shots. Where is our alien flower one from the other day:
And now 5.1 without the seed:
